Writings by Wandering Alice
My writing life goes back to being a small child when I would take myself into nature to explore, then share my thoughts with the page. There was solace to be found in wide open spaces, beneath trees, in the arms of the wind, along with peace in my mind as I held pen to paper. Writing is not something I do, it's who I am.
By my mid-twenties I had combined my passions for the earth and pen to travel the world as researcher for a tourist guide. This opportunity was the springboard to a life lived wandering and sharing words about my adventures; words that have appeared in magazines, anthologies and books. Having unschooled my now-adult daughter, I also teach the power of sharing words from the heart to homeschool kids and families all around the world as a coach for Brave Writer.
“A beautiful writer. Alice has depth and empathy that you can fell with each word she etches.”
Some of the magazines I have written for:
Breathe, Dalesman, Countryman, National Geographic Traveller, JUNO, Plant | Forage | Make. I also write the Characters of the Cut Column for Towpath Talk sharing the lives of those who live and work on the canals of England.
“Fearless traveller, nature lover, free spirit... Alice shares inspiring, beautiful, heartfelt wisdom.”

Note: Having previously written in my maiden name of Griffin, in 2022 I switched to my maternal Grandmother's name, Elgie. I was named after her and feel a deep connection to this side of my family who lived on the land and understood its rhythms. It feels right to continue this legacy.
“Alice's words breathe, conveying a sense of stillness and a gentle, kind presence.”
